My story in network marketing is one of the ultimate skeptic. Years ago I looked a couple of MLM opportunities. I was dragged to meetings at private homes and at hotels. I went to the business opportunity meetings. I looked at the compensation plan and I had thought about my big why, but I was still a huge skeptic.
One of the "opportunities" was with a large well established provider of soaps and detergents. The other was a telecommunications company that seemed to be ahead of its time.
I liked the business model and compensation plans, but I didn't like the idea of using my "warm market" to get into my business. Most of my friends weren't interested in owning their own business. My skepticism kept me from getting involved as did my feelings about not wanting to irritate my friends and family by trying to get them involved in my business. But I did believe in the concept of direct selling and network marketing. I heard all the hype, the compensation plan, how easy it was.... but I still didn't want to get involved because I wasn't comfortable with the idea of approaching friends and acquaintances about a business.
Then several years ago, I began creating websites with the intent of turning them into money making ventures that generated a lot of traffic from visitors who were looking for the information I was providing. I was successful and I watched the traffic at my websites begin to grow. At first there were only a few visitors, then dozens, then hundreds. After a while there were over two thousand visitors a day visiting my website.
These weren't just strangers... these were people who were specifically looking for information about the subject of my websites. This was a warm market that was essentially pre-sold on the information I was providing. That's how they found my website... by entering search terms into Google so they could find information about those terms.
Even on my best most fantastic day, I couldn't approach two thousand people about my network marketing business opportunity. But, if I could create a website about a topic that people were looking for, perhaps a percentage of them would be interested in my business opportunity and ask for details. I've been involved with technology and the Internet for a long time, but it wasn't until things began to look a little uncertain with my day job, that I got serious about looking at network marketing again.
In August of 2009, I found a network marketing company that I thought was a good fit for me and my interests so I took the plunge. Their strategy is really not that different from most other MLM or network marketing companies. I sign up and then get two others to sign up with me who get two others to sign up with them... two teaching two how to get two... and so on. You get the idea.
Here is my monthly journal of successes and failures as I build my business using some new strategies. Enjoy!
I registered the domain name Internet-Network-Marketing-Success.com to put into practice my thoughts and learning about using the Internet for network marketing and began building my website. I've had great success using Ken Evoy's Site Build it platform for creating websites that get traffic. It was no surprise that in reading Renegade Network Marketer, Ann Sieg also recommends Site Build it as a good website development tool too. So I ordered my fifth site from Site Build it, created my CSS file and templates, and began writing content for my website.
The great thing about building a website for my network marketing business is that I'll be able to monetize it so that as I'm attracting prospects, I'm also earning a small income through advertisements and affiliates. Depending on the traffic and quality of my content, this could be substantial.
My plan is to find all of the good information I can and combine it with my thoughts and learning about attracting traffic with my websites and how using some of these strategies to build my network marketing business.
I added eleven pages to my website in November.
In October of 2009 I began researching network marketing on the Internet to further my own understanding of how that could work. I ordered a copy of Ann Siegs Renegade Network Marketer and read it through a couple of times over. As I read Ann's thoughts on network marketing, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they were very similar to what I've been thinking for long time while I was building a couple of successful websites. I could use the Internet to educate interested folks about network marketing and my business opportunity. If I could create a website that attracts a lot of traffic from visitors looking or information about MLM and network marketing, surely a few would like what I'm doing and may be interested in joining my business organization.
Soon after signing up I approached a few friends and took them to a business opportunity meeting at a local hotel. They were skeptical too for the same reasons I am. Soon after that meeting and a few emails and phone calls, John signed up with my organization and now he's out trying to find other distributors to sign up with him.
How could my website help John to be successful? I know that I won't be successful in my network marketing venture unless I sign up other distributors and help them to be successful. Most of the folks I know are busy people and already employed so while they would like a second income, they don't have a lot of time to work the business. How can I help them find prospects interested in our business opportunity given the limited number of hours we have to work each week? Internet network marketing is the answer.
I ordered business cards and my company provided website. I began attending weekly business opportunity meetings, getting "trained", listening to mp3 recordings and watching videos of how to recruit, acquire customers, etc. I ordered the DVDs and associated literature about the opportunity. Took a few more unenthusiastic friends to business opportunity meetings.
